Continue to Dance the Magic Dance

The 2016 Golden Globes was held last night in LA, and I was able to catch the tail end after I had gotten home from work and I was able to listen to Tom Hanks give the Cecil B DeMille award to Denzel Washington which was beautiful and captured just how influential Denzel has been to the movie industry. The reason I bring this up is because last night one of the most influential men in music past away. And if you haven’t checked the news today that person is David Bowie, who died last night at the age of 69 after battling cancer for 18 months. The reason I bring up the Golden Globes is because Tom Hanks said something in his speech for Denzel Washington that has resonated with me, and reminds me of just how amazing David Bowie was.

“Every generation of film goers find him or her, the
artist that defines the time that we all live in…
Their obvious abilities and the mysterious power
they had to not just hold our attention but demand it”

From a young child my love for David Bowie began when I first saw him at age 4 in the movie  The Labyrinth this fantasy film surrounded by the characters that came out of the mind Jim Henson (who is also behind Sesame Street, and The Dark Crystal) who directed the film, and executive produced by George Lucas.  Bowie appears in this film as Jareth, the goblin king. The goblin king is obviously dangerous, but has a soft side to him. Looking back now it’s obviously all over the top 80’s hair and makeup, but my heart still does a little dance when I see Jareth, especially in the scene of the movie where his song “As The World Falls Down” plays as you see dozens of masquerade goers dance around the main heroine.
Bowie’s greatness stems more from his Music career than his acting, and his album David Bowie otherwise known as Space Oddity. In his musical career David Bowie was always over the top, with his costumes and makeup, but all of that didn’t matter, what was most important was the music, and his message. Time and time again Bowie wowed audiences with his music, from Space Oddity, Changes, Let’s Dance, and his newest wowers Blackstar, and Lazarus.
From someone who will deeply miss Bowie’s presence in the universe, I must say that I will continue to Dance the Magic Dance, and be a Space Oddity. And the Goblin King will live on forever in my heart.
