Meet Dash R aka Awfulmadre

Dash Romero, also known as @awfulmadre, is paving her way through Georgia by creating and producing raw and distinct visuals. Romero, creative director for Awful Records, creates dynamic visuals that provide a very unique visual perspective. One of her most notable projects "In State, Outta State" by Father, Archibald Slim, and Ethereal, Romero gives her audience a subjective perspective by recreating and paying tribute to that 70's show. This creative and driven artist is also taking her $10 Quickweave dance party on tour to build up her presence in the industry.

Check out our interview with @awfulmadre below to get to know her on a personal level.

First off tell us your name, age, where you're from and what do you do.

My name is Dash Romero. I'm 25 and from Macon, Ga. I am the resident photographer, videographer, and creative director for Awful Records.

When did you realize you were meant to be behind the camera?

I started shooting when I was 13 on a summer vacation in North Carolina. I was so bored but surrounded by such beautiful scenery that it was inspiring. I picked up our family camera and just began to shoot every single day, gaining knowledge about things like "composure" and really getting a passion for the work I was producing. When the vacation was over, I started my own photography company because I KNEW this was the career I wanted.

Staying self motivated and focused is extremely hard to do, how do you keep your moral up?

Self motivation is actually my "achilles heel". I have to constantly surround myself with like minded creatives. My friends inspire me, seeing the things they accomplish will put a fire under anyone's ass to push yourself to be great.

Are all your friends in Awful Records?

Friend is an understatement. Awful Records is literally my family. I feel like we've all watched each other grow up and come into our own. I wouldn't be who or where I am without them. They let me be myself and I love them for it.

It must be amazing to have all that positive creative energy around you! How is it when you tour with the them? Are you always occupied?

I've popped out on a few show dates for various awful artists, but I've never traveled around with anyone yet. Honestly, I don't know if I ever want to (unless it was for my music). I feel like tour changes peoples. It's definitely fun, but stressful. Being somewhere new daily, having to deal with fans/strangers, constantly being on the road and away from home. I'm a creature of habit who love comfort and that would totally take me out of my element (which might be something I need) lol.

From conference calls, to merchandise design, to setting up photoshoots, My life feels like one big business meeting, except half the time I'm sipping wine and in my pj's. I feel like my work is never done. Whether it be for myself, or my label mates, or for my dance party, I am always in business mode so I always feel occupied.

What gets you in a creative zone?

Wine lol but honestly I run off of my emotions. They play a big role in jump starting my creative process. I use art almost as an escape, a means of making what i'm feeling tangible.

Do you have a favorite video that you have shot/directed?

So far, it's definitely been "In State, Outta State" by Father, Archibald Slim, and Ethereal. I wanted to pay tribute to that 70's show with the cypher style panning. I had so many other iconic scenes I wanted to recreate for it, but it was already 5 am, we were tired, and the weather was ass, so we decided to just keep it a one take shot and it worked out perfectly.

We love that video! Has any other video inspired you, (like from music artist like Kanye, Kid Cudi, Prince, etc)?

One word: MICHAEL JACKSON. The king of music videos in my opinion. I must give credit where credit is due, two current artists that go above and beyond in terms of visuals are Kali Uchis and FKA Twigs. Their art direction is perfection to me and that's what I strive to achieve in the future. It's almost like branding yourself, being consistent with the level of set design, cinematography, color pallets, etc.

I can totally agree!  Do you plan on directing or shooting for anyone else besides your colleagues  in awful records?

I will feel complete once I shoot a Young Thug video lol.

Any goals/ plans to accomplish by 2016?

My 2016 seems so lit already. I'm taking my $10 Quickweave dance party on tour (U.S. and U.K.*fingers crossed* ) I'm really learning how to brand myself this year. I'm shy and quiet but i'm pushing myself and doing things that take me out of my comfort zone. I want to dive into the music realm, have a solo art exhibit, a coffee table book, learn how to do DJ, direct more videos/conceptual photo's that reflect who I am as an artist, launch awful records apparel. I feel like I do so much and get so little recognition but all thats soon about to change. Being a girl in this "creative" industry is hard and all I've ever want to is break barriers and be treated equally.

Anything else you would like to let people know about you?

I think that sums it up lol that was my first interview ever and I thank you for even taking the time to acknowledge me :)
