Introducing Chromat
Introducing Chromat
Chromat is a high-end fashion label that, unlike many other popular labels in the industry, uses their platform to focus on important issues like body positivity and equal representation. Chromat uses its growing fame to shine light on such prevalent and ongoing problems that run abundantly in the world, in doing this they are single handedly revolutionizing the fashion industry. Chromat is unique in the sense that they make a special point to strive for diversity in their model casting as well as decisions of who they work with. Thus, introducing a shift in a predominantly straight, white male ruled industry.
The founder of Chromat, Becca McCharen, said “To me, it is disturbing that, historically, men have decided what women wear and how women feel about their bodies.” It is amazing to see the fashion world start to lean more towards inclusivity above all.
Beyoncé can be seen wearing Chromat on her world tour. Chromat has also been worn by Madonna, Nicki Minaj, Grimes, Twigs, Iggy Azealia, Azealia Banks, Haim, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora, Natalia Kills, Maluca and Tyra Banks. These are all influential people of our time and most of them are even notable feminists. This also just goes to show that Chromat not only makes you feel good, but also look good! Chromat’s style is built from an architectural standpoint, considering Becca herself has an extensive background in architectural work. Becca said in an interview that “Chromat is swim, lingerie and harness structures that build on the body and built for strong, powerful women. The woman we design for is unafraid, intelligent and interested in standing out.”
We all know that seeing a runway model with nearly unrealistic body proportions on television can send out signals that travel directly to the minds of our youth, leading to a build up of self esteem issues like no other. Not to mention the utter lack of representation of people of color and members of the LGBTQA+ community in the fashion world. Becca said “All our runway models represent who inspires us, whether it’s transwomen, women of color, curve models. That’s my world, and that’s the world we live in and that’s who I want to celebrate. Chromat has cast several amazing trans women, androgynous women, queer women and men in our runway shows and I hope to see more designers doing the same. It’s exciting to be at the beginning of trends and knowing we have had the power to change both styles and minds.” I couldn’t have said it better myself! Big thanks to Becca McCharen and all the other queer designers in the fashion world who are endlessly inspiring us all.
