The Evolution of Skinny Jeans

Skinny jeans is a fashion trend that refuses to go away. This has been an ongoing trend since the 1900s. Back in the early 1900s women began to wear skinny jeans; however they were limited to where they could wear them.

Skinny jeans were to be worn for activities such as sports or housework. Most skinny jeans were made out of a canvas fabric, very few were made out of denim. The skinny jeans worn by women at the time were looser than modern tight fitting skinny jeans. The skinny jeans were tighter than worn by most women in the early 1900s.

Nevertheless this new trend was appealing to many women and a cultural change that begin around 1915s helped inspire the infamous ‘flapper girl’ style that was sported by many young women during the 1920s.

By the 1950s skinny jeans were part of a counterculture movement. In the 1960s skinny jeans were similar to those in the 50s but had more options such as patterned or Capri skinny jeans. In the 1970s skinny jeans were apart of yet another counterculture movement, which was intended to unite genders clothes.

The whole ‘punk’ era allowed both men and women to share similar clothing styles without society being too judge mental. The ‘punk’ era continued on into the 80s when most punk inspired skinny jeans were designed with safety pins, patches, and holes. The 1990s skinny jeans were high waisted with skinny ankles, which came to be known as ‘mom jeans’. By the early 2000s skinny jeans were made to be worn low on the hips and to be skin tight.

Then by the 2010s jeans evolution was complete and they were started to be seen on everyone. Skinny jeans are common amongst many people’s wardrobe. From first ladies to Hollywood stars to ordinary people wear skinny jeans. Skinny jeans have been modeled from sidewalks to runways.
