Meet URHOTDAD

Music speaks for itself but a well-crafted artist speaks volumes. Part-time rapper and part-time fashion designer, @URHOTDAD manages to use rock music as a platform of endless inspiration. The popularity of rock music has had a massive impact on pop culture, fashion, and attitudes.  This 19 year old artist is creating and expressing those musical influences through both his music and designs. Despite having a couple run ups with the law, @URHOTDAD uses his obstacles to push his vision even further thus creating a sound so obscure and unique. Peep our one-on-one interview with him and take a look at his first capsule collection.

Could you tell us about yourself? Where you are from, where you are based, how old you are and what do you do?

UHD: My stage name is URHOTDAD and I'm 19. I'm from Charlotte, NC but I currently reside in Greensboro, NC. I'm a rapper/graphic designer/designer and I actually have a modeling gig coming up this year so yeah I do a lot. I'm just a street nigga tired of jail and being broke so I'm out here getting money the best ways I know. I got kicked out of college after a semester so here I am now.

Please elaborate over your work. How long have you been rapping and designing? Talk to us about your fashion designs and how you got into fashion?

UHD: I've been rapping and writing for forever now but I just started putting out music like 2 weeks ago and people fuck with it. I've been doing graphic design for like 4 years now ever since i discovered tumblr. I just do capsules and collections at a time...my first collection was homage to old rock bands that have inspired me in fashion and music.

Could you tell us more about your first capsule? Do you have any previews of that?

UHD: I got into fashion in high school, I was always called weird or looked at differently (sometimes in a cool way) because I wore different shit and I made my clothes.

Tell me how rock inspired you? Does music seem to inspire your fashion designs?

UHD: My first capsule was like a couple months ago. Not necessarily rock music has inspired me entirely but they're persona's and lifestyle has always appealed to me. Especially glam rock from the 70s, I discovered Sister, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie years ago and they really helped me not give a fuck about what anybody has to say about what I wear or how I carry myself. And nah not really, not much inspires me lately tbh except drugs. I honestly believe i'm the wave and not the follower so I should be doing the inspiring.

Talk to us about how glam rock inspired you. What made you get into that?

UHD: I got into rock music because rap and hip hop was just too little of a box to stay in basically, but my middle school English teacher used to play nirvana and guns and roses during class and I eventually caught on and I liked it. It was pretty dope how they seemed untouchable and like rebels and didn't give a fuck.

Who is your favorite rock group? Who is your favorite artist in general? What made you do everything you're doing now? What had you going in jail?

UHD: Oh my fav rock band is probably Queen. My fav artists in general, ummmm i listen to a lot of music but i listen to a lot of Key! Kodak Black, Young Thug 21 Savage and a bunch of other SoundCloud artists. And I'm doing everything in doing now cause I love making music and networking with other people, eventually I'd love to live off my art. And idk I been in jail too many times I be depressed every time basically, but the last time I got arrested I was got transferred to 3 different counties and I was in there for like 2 months. I started reading the bible, meditating and reading hella books.

So being in jail changed a lot for you mostly mentally. What's the biggest goal you trying to accomplish in 2016?

UHD: Yeah, but in a good way cause I'm not going back. My biggest goal is to set a great foundation for me and my career and go back to college lol.

How do you feel about these artist making music just for soundcloud plays (music that sound the same like everyone else's)?

UHD: Lmfao, everybody clones i don't pay no attention to em though i got real life problems.
