N: My name is Nina Timothy, but people recognize me as @ninaamour or Rude Gyal. I'm 23 and I live in PG county Maryland a block outside of DC. For the last year I've done hospitality coordination on top of curating for my online shop and songwriting.

What made you or inspired you to get into songwriting and owning an online boutique?

N: I've always been a writer and very musical. I grew up on the stage in school, and as for my online boutique, my first job was at a thrift store. I've always loved antique finds and looks. People always asked me where I shopped and asked me to shop for them. I've even dabbled in styling. It started with me wanting to get rid of some vintage looks I was holding onto for too long. That and wanting to share the finds I revamp.

What are some of your personal favorite stores? What is your style when it comes down to fashion? & talk to us about your musical side! What artists have inspired you to be the songwriter and musical intellect that you are?

N: Personally, I'm a thrifter. I'll buy my shoes, trainers & swimwear from ASOS & H&M but I prefer to buy clothes & accessories by other black owned businesses and in the thrift store. I've been told my style is the past meets the future. I incorporate vintage era staples with futuristic jewelry a lot. Nina Simone inspires me a lot, as well as FKA Twigs, Erykah Badu, and Sade. I want to get better at songwriting and find my niche before releasing anything seriously.

You were mentioning who inspired you. But I want the audience to get to know you in a deeper perspective. Tell us what you love about your craft and what purpose do you want it to have? How do you want it to impact the community, listeners and buyers? You are a woman of multiple traits and crafts, where do you see yourself by the end of 2016 and in the next 5 years?

N: Well I love that song, and the voice comes from the soul. When I sing, and free verse I feel like my soul becomes palpable. Organially written songs are like universal soul matter that come from the collective emotional body you know? I want to bring to light those feelings people forgot, or didn't know they had. I want to bring a sense of relief and soothe listeners. I wanna make people dance, and feel me too. And thank you kindly. By the end 2016 I see myself working multiple jobs, selling one of my best capsule collections yet, and pushing the songs I will have released that year. The next 5 years? That's too far a trajectory for me. I see myself dropping a studio album and having my first child. I see my business booming and myself looking into going back to school but in no particular order or timeline.

What does your dream project of capsule collection consist of? Who would you like to collaborate with? In music and fashion realm. Tell us all about art basel! I would of sold a kidney to go! Where you able to network with other artists? How was that experience?

N: Well, multiple diverse pieces definitely! I have some ideas I don't want to talk too much about yet. I'd like to collaborate with a designer or curator of designs to give wearers cooler templates for my clever words. I can't say who because there is no one I can think of off the top to be honest. Not that I'm opposed to working with others at all, it's just that I'm just getting started getting my ideas out on my own lol.

Basel was interesting to say the least. So much fun! And I did! I got to meet or see from afar a handful of other artists I admire. It was surreal. It was also a bit dangerous. We almost got trapped in this sketchy air bnb situation on our first night in town and had to ask for a refund  lol. There were condoms everywhere, a dildo and it was dirty! Beware of sketchy air bnb's in Miami. It was a great experience though and I can't wait to go back. It was my first year at Basel and I got to table at a social sponsored by Mikey Likes It Ice Cream, and share my creations and goals with new people. I look forward to returning with even more and being able to see more art next time.

How has music changed you? You mentioned about wanting your musical bring light. Is their any experience you have had with a certain album or song that has helped you? If so what and who?

N: Music has saved my life more than once. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill helped me mature through heartbreak and teach me that forgiveness is about letting go. My first love did me very dirty and it set a precedent for me. Lauryn Hill helped me through that.

A short film inspired by SZA's song Sweet November and a lot of personal experience with being let down by a lover I have no business loving.
Starring the lovely Nina. @ninaamour on twitter & IG.
