UK Producer: Butterscotch Honey

I managed to snag a cool interview with Kyra, who is also known as ‘butterscotch honey’ on SoundCloud. Currently based in Manchester, England, this 18 year old is producing hella heat on FL Studio (formally known as FruityLoops) and creating a sound so distinct that its bound to make this producer make waves in 2016.

Check out butterscotch honey’s interview and music below:

Urban Time Mag: How long have you been doing music? What made you want to start doing music?

BH: I started making music because some friends we’re doing it so when they showed me how they did it, I thought it looked fun af and wanted to try,

Urban Time Mag: What “sound” would you say your music is? What would you classify your current music as?

BH: I honestly can’t really say what my sound is because its changing all the time, I don’t really like to stick to one genre because it gets boring so I try and experiment with different styles and put my own twist on it. I’d say my current sound is all over the place haha, I change it up but there are certain things that I keep similar like hi hats. I like to use a lot of panning, rolls and pitch shifts.

Urban Time Mag: What inspires you?

BH: I’m inspired by a lot of different things, certain producers like Drippin, Yung Gud and just whoever I find on the Internet honestly. I really like the grime style too because the bass always sounds so weird in some songs but over all I guess it’s music itself that inspires me because there’s always so much you can do to it.

Urban Time Mag: Is your family musical?

BH: The only person who is musical is my dad, he used to be in a UB40 tribute band so he knows how to play a few instruments.

Urban Time Mag: Where you influenced by old records & tapes?

BH: As for old tapes and records, I’ve listened to them and thought they were cool. Fat Jon used an old jazz sample on his track ‘How You Feel’ and that’s one of my all time favorites.

Urban Time Mag: What is your fondest musical moment? Is music a long-term thing in your life now?

BH: My fondest musical moment is changing all the time. It’s either when I make something that I feel proud of or when I learn how to do something new in fruity loops, or when I mix something down right haha, its hard to say. Music is definitely something I plan on doing long term, even if I get nowhere with it because the feelings it gives me are too good to pass up and I think it’s a really fun thing to do.

Urban Time Mag: Could you describe to me what your studio or current setup/surroundings look like?

BH: My current set up is some Yamaha speakers, a midi keyboard, a Launchpad mini and a 24 inch monitor. I got lights that change color so it creates a cool vibe for whenever I’m making something.

Urban Time Mag: If you could give any advice to your future you and younger you regarding music what would it be?

BH: I’d say to my future self not to give up and not to think the worst whenever I get bad beat block, practice makes perfect really applies when it comes to making music. To my younger self I’d say I should have started using FL sooner because things would probably be somewhat easier.
