The Iconic Missy Elliott
In honor of music month and being that the Vh1 Hip Hop Honors is approaching I decided to profile the one and only Missy.
When you mix glamour, funky style and edge together the outcome would be Missy Elliott.
Melissa Elliott a.k.a Missy took the industry by storm with her witty wordplay, flawless production, and unforgettable catchy hooks. She made it a mission to stand out from the rest, she refused to be anything like her peers and created amazing art.
She entered the game without gimmicks attached to her. She solely based her image and art from authenticity . A plus sized fashionable woman was foreign to the male dominated hip hop world, but she made it work.
She not only stayed true to herself, but her lyrics displayed feminism and disapproved of misogynistic stand points, songs like She's a bitch and One Minute Man were created to empower women. She defied all rules which resulted into her own lane being created.
From her makeup looks to her fashion choices she has always been in a league of her own. Her visuals are mirrors of her amazing style and personality.
Missy is the total package and this has allowed her to be discussed twenty plus years later in the game. She is the true definition of black girl magic and one of the best Mc's to ever rap.
Here are some of my favorite videos and style choices from the icon.
1. Denim done right at the 2006 Grammy's. She sported cool denim upon denim looks before it was trendy to others. She always stayed ten steps ahead of everyone.
2. She dazzled in 2003 at the premiere of the movie Honey. This look is more tone downed and very feminine, but she still has an edge that only Missy can possess.
3. Missy Elliott - The Rain Video
This video features finger waves that will make you sea sick, her partner in crime Timbland ,very stylish color schemes, and not to mention this is where the world was introduced to her iconic trash bag.
She sashays in her multicolored Adidas track suits, danced in style and even gave it to us backwards. From bees decorating her face, her paying homage to Aaliyah and Left-Eye in style this is easily one of her best videos.
Missy has influenced many artists and left her signature stamp in Hip Hop. She proved that she could stand the test of the time and there will be another like her.
