Noname Dropped #Telefone
In 2014, when Mick Jenkins dropped The Water[s], he featured Noname on the happiest track, 'Comfortable.' In it, she says what everyone was thinking at the time: Telefone never comin' out, what's the hold up? Where you been at? She'd made many promises of a soon-coming release for her first official project a number of times (over the course of what feels like forever). We have waited so long for this and, alas, on the final day of July, in the summer of 2016—following a string of teasing tweets and retweets—Telefone was dropped, and it made me just as emotional as I expected.
When she tweeted "#Telefone is here" at 5:57 pm with the link leading to it, I was driving so I didn't see the notification right away. Once I was stopped, I checked my phone, went directly to the website, and texted in my group chat of Friends That Understand My Obsession with Noname, which, basically, looked like this:
Yes I, essentially, live-texted my first listening experience with the flawless ten-track project. Through all the excitement, I was overwhelmed and—clearly—confused at first. It was so angelic and perfect. I didn't even mind that she said it was coming out three hours earlier, and then it didn't. I didn't mind that she said it was coming out three years earlier. The wait was worth it, and Noname is too pure for this world.
