Maya Indigo
Maya is a sultry DMV film maker dedicated to displaying the complexities of everyday relationships, whether they be platonic or romantic. She chats with Urban time a bit about her beginnings and her very near future.
Start us off with your name, age, and what you do.
M: My name is Maya, I am nineteen years old, and I am a visual artist.
Meet the artist.
When did you realize you enjoyed making short films?
M: I signed up for a video production class and that's when I first experienced it, I wish I would've taken it earlier, but I thought it was too hard and I should stick to photography. It then became another venue for me to express myself. Film also helped me to expand on the narratives of the relationships in my life and bring them to a new light.
Apart of the "Ode to a Dream" series.
What inspired you to get serious about doing makeup?
M:After a rough patch I started doing make up as a way to make myself feel better. It also came in handy during shoots when the makeup artists just wasn't getting my vision, but it's really not my thing. It's a tool for my photography and films, but it's not my main focus in terms of visual art. For some reason people think that all I do is makeup, but I also make short films, music videos, and photography.
What piece of advice would you input in your next film?
M: Well, last year I felt like a failure for leaving school in New York and coming back to the DMV and I know people can understand that feels like, to want something so bad, but it just doesn't feel right. I want to connect with those people and let them know that if you hit a down point there's always a chance to come up again you just have to keep going through the motions. If I got the opportunity to convey that understanding maybe I could spare someone the pain of feeling what I felt.
Where did you find the inspiration for your "When he calls" video?
I really loved that SZA song (Sweet November) and when closed my eyes I envisioned a girl who loves and cares for someone who she knows doesn't really love her. Plus I have a lot of personal experience with being let down by lovers I have no business loving.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?
M: Hopefully I am an established and graduate who finally more than just a makeup artists in the eyes of my peers. I want to be in love with myself and wholeheartedly committed to developing my art. As well as being an artist that other black girls can relate and draw inspiration from.
