The Mom Jean
Originally a popular 90's piece, it seems as though the Mom jean has returned, and the trend isn't going anywhere fast. With the popular high-waisted, tight-fitting skinny jeans being popular on the high-street, it seems the Mom jean's baggier, more boyish fit has some competition. However, with the likes of Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid pulling them off and showcasing their versatility, it's a sure thing that Mom jeans are much easier to work with and can be styled for any occasion.
Here, I'll be showing you three different ways the Mom jean can be styled in order to pull off three effortless looks, ranging from casual to formal - covering your back for every occasion.
THE VINTAGE EDIT
Glasses || Depop Lipstick || Mac (Stone) |
This throwback look is an effortless step back into the past. The glasses may be reminiscent of what your parents used to wear but it seems just like Mom jeans, the big lenses with the delicate gold frames are making a comeback. The best thing about these glasses are; they're available at low prices from pretty much any Charity Shop or second-hand store, these ones specifically being purchased from the phone app Depop. The mauve-brown lipstick is complimentary to the glasses and the entire outfit, although it follows the very much present trend of the Kylie Jenner Brown Lip, making the look still current.
T-shirt || UO Mom Jeans || UO |
The brown, sepia colour scheme of the casual T-shirt also compliments the golden frames and the dark-toned lipstick effortlessly, which helps pull the whole outfit together. The stripes give a youthful edge, the prominent brown and yellow, with the subtle red contrast also adding a vintage feel to the outfit. The differing widths and tones in the stripes add interest to the look, also keeping up with the current stripe trend and showcasing a possible way they can be styled. A light-wash denim jacket can always be thrown over the top in order to make the outfit more suitable for the colder weather, as the black wash allows for the double-denim.
Old School Vans || Schuh |
The black-wash Mom jeans in this look stabilises this outfit as it contrasts with the busy tee. They also undoubtedly bring all the dark tones together from head-to-toe, tying in the lips and the brown tone in the t-shirt. The shade of these jeans helps separate the look from the typical Mom jean you're used to seeing, again allowing more styling possibilities and a new edge to the jean. It continues the youthful vibe as the subtle worn-look of these Mom jeans, helps recreate the look of a generation that grew up playing outside. This adds character to the whole look and also can be achieved at low cost, as again, charity shops and second-hand stores are more than likely to stock similar.
Double-black Old School Vans help the focus of the outfit centre around the contrast between the T-shirt and the jeans, but complete a boyish look that is perfect for 'nothing days' and outings. Any casual trainer, or perhaps a Doc Martin boot would also act perfectly in completing this look.
THE STREET EDIT
Personally, this is my favorite way to the style the Mom jean. It embodies everything on trend at the moment whilst still having a vintage-edge. The sporty theme running through this look is something not commonly associated with Mom jeans, but styled in this way, it can be pulled off effortlessly.
The mock-neck basic tee is timeless and weather-appropriate and allows the attention to be on the other pieces involved in this outfit. With the simple t-shirt, it makes the vintage Adidas track-jacket a statement piece. The casual, waterproof jacket is ultimately what adds an urban vibe to the look. It has a prominent monochrome feel, with the green detailing to add interest, but allows a simplistic look.
Mom Jeans || Topshop |
The sports brand helps the outfit have a current feel although the jacket itself is considered a vintage piece. With the jacket being waterproof, it also allows warmth and protection from the typical rainy days whilst still remaining fashionable.
In this look, the Mom jeans featured are a dark-wash which contradicts the white in the jacket but keeps the subtly of the whole outfit constant. This particular jean could be used in a variety of different ways to accessorise and accentuate more statement pieces of an outfit. It's in this way, I usually style this pair of dark-washed Mom jeans.
Adidas Superstars || Schuh |
These Adidas Superstars also become a statement, as they compliment the jacket seamlessly. Originally released in 1969, these trainers help keep the theme of timeless pieces constant throughout the whole look. It helps conclude the outfit as something of pieces of the past with a new edge, making the Mom jeans more urban and sport-ready than ever.
THE NIGHT EDIT
Crop-Top || Amazon Blazer || Forever 21 |
In the colder months, it's difficult to think of an outfit to wear that's suitable for a night-out but still offers warmth. Although the black cropped-top may not be the most weather appropriate, it makes the outfit more youthful and can be substituted for a blouse etc for a more formal occasion.
Mom Jeans || UO |
The loose-fitting beige blazer offers a juxtaposition as it contrasts the tighter fit of the rest of the outfit. In doing this, it offers a casual edge to the look, still looking put-together even if you haven't had hours to prepare an outfit, ensuring you're ready for that night out. Not forgetting, the additional warmth that is necessary for the colder months. Even though the material is not particularly thick, it allows layering and makes the outfit a perfect transition into Spring. The beige tone again, makes the look current and on-trend.
Wedges || New Look |
The black wedges make the outfit suitable for any occasion by only offering a little bit of height. The boot-like look allows warmth and are suitable for the winter trends, but by having that small wedge, it adds formality. They're a perfect, classy way to bring the whole outfit together whilst still keeping the look affordable.
Every item is linked if it is still available.
